Apple iOS 17.0.3 was launched on Wednesday, October 4. That was pretty quick, because Apple only broke its silence on the subject last Saturday, September 30th, when it contacted me with a statement. Along with the security issues, it had another purpose, the release said, stating that “it fixes an issue that could cause the apple to heat up more than expected.”
Note that Apple didn’t say which . Not only have owners of previous apple handset complained that their handset were getting too hot to handle, but Apple told me directly that the new titanium and aluminum on the 15 pro and apple Pro Max Frames are better at dissipating heat, suggesting that t
his may indeed be the case. t has been the reason here.
It was still an issue though, and 9to5Mac pointed out that more than half (57%) of readers responding to its poll had experienced some form of problem. Of course, while people may respond to such a poll if they have problems, it may not be representative. Nevertheless, if the results of a publication are not replicated to a wider audience, it is a large figure. I will add that I haven’t had any heating issues with any of the apple review units I’ve been testing.

About half (27%) of respondents had experienced a hot iPhone during normal use, rather than during use or demanding charging, when the temperature rise is more likely.

Now, Jason Hanner at ZDNet has run some thermal imaging tests with amazing photos of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max that show the temperature when the phone is fast charging.

The iphone problem is solved.

Using a front-facing infrared camera, Jason Hanner measured the heat before installing the iOS update and found that during fast charging with a 35W charger, the phone reached 107.1 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7C). It got hot. which is hot.

Hanner then installed iOS 17.0.3 and let the phone’s batteries die. The next fast charging provided different results, with a maximum of 93.8 degrees Fahrenheit (34.3C) and they “never got hot to the touch,” Hanner said.

iPhone performance is not affected

There were also concerns that performance would suffer if the phone was heated by throttling. Apple told me in its statement that it wouldn’t, and Hainer’s tests bear that out. “It doesn’t appear that Apple has reduced the performance of the iPhone 15 Pro models to better control heat. I haven’t noticed any difference in the speed or responsiveness of either phone. Apple Insider also ran benchmarks on the 15 and Pro Max after updating to iOS 17.0.3 and found “little or no difference” with the pre-update benchmarks of both phones.

I’ll be monitoring the update response in the Upgrade You post as the week goes on, so please check back there for any news, good or bad. But for now, at least, things look promising.
